Medical science has advanced over generations. There are some basic principles of survival and safety that can be learnt and used by non-medically trained individuals to provide immediate support to a patient until medical help arrives.
In more developed nations, BLS is quite commonly taught to non-medically trained individuals. In India however despite its need, due to limited access to immediate emergency care, BLS is not commonly available for non-medical individuals.
HERD Foundation organized a BLS course for a group of Non-Medics from the Institute of Engineers, Rotary Club Bapu Nagar and Rotary Club Mid Town, Jaipur on the 23rd of February 2009. A BLS algorithm was given to all participants as a ready reference.
